    • What a surprising and interesting little book! Fans of "The Green Ember" will understand when I say that this is the size of "The Black Star of Kingston" but the caliber of "Ember Falls." I appreciate all of "The Green Ember" books but each offering has gotten, in my opinion, stronger, tighter, and more compelling. My children listen to "The Green Ember" or "Ember Falls" at least 3 nights per week as they are drifting off to sleep. Our family believes that Heather, Picket, Smalls, Emma, and thei [...]

    • Oh, I just felt like I sat down for coffee with an old friend. No book has warmed my family’s heart like the Green Ember series has. I didn’t even realize how much I missed our old friends, but it was wonderful catching up and hearing more of their beautiful story. SD Smith truly has a way with words and draws you in where you don’t want to stop reading. I get sad knowing the series is almost complete, but as I read and see my 1 and 3 year old playing off to the side, I realize I will have [...]

    • What an excellent little book. This tells the story of the archer Jo Shanks. My children and I loved getting to know this hero more. The book was exciting, engaging, and so well written. My family can not wait for more.

    • This book was an amazing side story, and despite being small, it packed a big punch. Would recommend this for any Green Ember fan.

    • What a fantastic little book! I loved getting this glimpse into the life of another character in the Green Ember series. As always, I love how S.D. Smith writes his characters and shares how they grow and struggle to become more than just what their circumstances seem to have set them up to become. I can’t wait to read more of Jo’s story in the next book!

    • The Last Archer was such a surprise book! We've been waiting for news of S.D. Smith's next book in The Green Ember series, Ember Rises, and had no idea that a side story was coming. It is a really fun read. The Green Ember itself will forever be a favorite book, because it was the first book that my whole family unanimously loved. But we love all of S.D. Smith's books and they just keep getting even more and more exciting. The Last Archer has a slightly more mature feel, a little bit more like E [...]

    • absolutely loved it. fast paced and exciting. really neat to witness same events as in green ember but from another perspective I love the series books, but I would love to see other side stories like this come out in time! no pressure, Sam ;)

    • The backstory of Jo Shanks and just how Heather Longtreader made it back to Cloud Mountain to rally soldiers for the fight.Sigh. We were all so very sad that this book was over AND that we have to wait until March for the next book. Thankfully, we still have "The Black Star of Kingston" to hold us over and we will reread Ember Falls closer to release date. These books are full of adventure, brokenness that leads to redemption, and forgiveness. Rising above and standing for a greater cause. The s [...]

    • I sure hope S.D. Smith continues writing after the Green Ember series is done. His writing captivates my boys like very few other authors can. The kids were so excited each time a familiar character from Ember Falls entered the storyline in The Last Archer. We are all eagerly anticipating the release of Ember Rising!

    • I definitely enjoyed this short story, reading it all in one sitting! I liked seeing the Green Ember events through the eyes of someone on the 'outskirts' and Jo was a likable character, with his own doubts and fears, but determined to make something of himself. I really appreciated his willingness to re-think his pre-suppositions about other rabbits. He has a bit of a hang-up about wanting to live up to other people's expectations and standardsd while it's admirable that he strives to be the be [...]

    • You need the Green Ember books in your home! These books are wonderful and my kids from junior high down to pre-k love them. Okay the adults in our home love these book as well! S.D. Smith does not disappoint. He is an amazing writer. These stories are so easy to feel at home in. We love the characters and will be talking about them for years and years. (while most likely re-reading the entire series).

    • I love the rabbits on the Green Ember series so while I am waiting for the 3rd book, this was a great reminder of the characters and their quest to bring peace and prosperity to the land of Natalia. I am going to reread the first two so the story is fresh in my mind by the time the new book is published. Where does greed come from? Why does power corrupt sometimes?

    • I really enjoyed it, particularly the parts that I can't talk about because I don't want to be guilty of propagating spoilers. So I'll just say that, for that one thought I thought about that one thing, it was nice to see my suspicion confirmed. Also, I particularly like stories that tell stories from another perspective so you can learn something new about a familiar plot point. Fantastic read!

    • I'm on page 13. One part in The Last Archer revealed a lot of information about Jo, an archer's family & past. ""And" Lund replied slowly, "your father's ghost"" "Think of everyone who lost their loved ones to be murdered by Morbin." ""My mother,"" Jo whispered through clenched teeth." (9, 12). These quotes show how Jo's parents have died and Jo might not have any family left.

    • It did it's job at keeping the Green Ember story fresh in our minds while we wait for Ember Rising. It was fun to see a now familiar story told from a new perspective. It only took a few days to finish and the kids loved it.

    • This is a great addition to the world of the Green Ember! I loved seeing this side story of Jo Shanks. He's an easy character to root for. I hope more of these backstory novelettes are added to the cannon.

    • The best thing to say about this one: I wasn’t ready for it to end. Smith’s protagonists may be rabbits, but they represent the best of the human heart: courage and faithfulness and unswerving commitment to the cause of good. Love sharing these with my kids.

    • The Last Archer is the story of Jo Shanks which takes place at the same time as The Green Ember. I've enjoyed The Green Ember series and am looking forward to reading Ember Rising and one day rereading this with my daughter.

    • I always appreciate seeing a story from a different perspective. We love this series. I would've appreciated this book being a little bit longer and including more details/back story, but I understand that it was only designed to be a short, side story. We just didn't want it to be over!

    • Fantastic story I can’t say enough good things about this series of books. Great for kids and adults. Heart pounding action and dramatic battle scenes. SD Smith is a master storyteller.

    • I really liked the way this book ties in with The Green Ember. It was an enjoyable, quick read. In the tradition of Redwall, another favorite series.

    • A tight well crafted story. My only complainto short. BUT I loved I could read it one sitting. That is not common for this mom. This story has captured my heart.

    • Great Book!!!A great book with an awesome story!I'd recommend it to anyone who likes fantasy/sci-fi!Great tie in to the other books!

    • Go, Jo! Go!Love LOVE the series! A great little story about Jo Shanks. If you love rabbits, read the Green Ember series.

    • Awesome!I loved this book and am very excited about the new one coming soon! There is nothing that I don't like about this book

    • I absolutely loved this book. It was so good. I loved how SD Smith tied in a different aspect of the Green Ember Series!

    • I read this book out loud to my middles (ages 10 and 7), and we all loved it! Absolutely cannot wait for the third book in the Ember series to come out. We have immensely enjoyed all of S. D. Smith’s books.

    • I wasn’t going to rate this one as high as the others, but then I finished the book. Looking back as a whole, this book is worth all 5 stars. It’s such a great story of a great hero. I love that it was short and an easy read. It’s a fabulous story to read after reading at least the first Green Ember book.

    • My son loves the Green Ember series, and he asked me to read this out loud to him. I enjoyed it too! A fantastic story with fleshed-out characters and sort of a coming of age drama for a character from the Green Ember, Jo Shanks. We're both looking forward to the next Green Ember book, and thankful for S.D. Smith's creative gifts and whimsical nature. Keep on writing!
