    • A dragon has been busting in on Jack and eating the lunch Jack cooks for his family. Annoying, but not life-threatening. For this, Jack cuts the dragon down with a sword. As well as gold and jewels, the dragon's mountain of treasure includes a beautiful girl for Jack to marry. Jack and his brothers have names and identities. The girl is just a nameless object to be won.Not the messages I want my children growing up.

    • This is my second time reading this book, so I'll link to my original livejournal note at timonsvejournal/53025mlI see that one reviewer felt that the lone female character was not a good role model for one's daughters, which is no doubt true. I expect, however, that the daughters would identify with Jack, since most young readers don't allow gender to limit their empathy or self-identification.
