    • my favourite library find yet, because never woulda bought it just by looking at it, because how unfinished it looks at first, and slightly retarded-looking but this is sweetly romantic and as far away from in your face as comix can get I grew to love how Orff draws the girl wearing glasses playing badminton It was cool reading this back to back with Chester Brown's anti-romantic Paying for It, because Waterwise couldn't be more dissimilar in tone, and yet it doesn't refute Brown's assertio [...]

    • I picked up Waterwise by Joel Orff at my library at the same time I got Kampung Boy by Lat. I liked the cover art of a pair of funky fish swimming over a background of brick buildings.Waterwise is a mood piece in the form of a young adult graphic novel. It begins with Jimbo sitting at the shore trying to capture the perfect lines in a portrait of a woman drawn from memory. He happens to be at the right place at the right time for a chance meeting with an old girl friend, Emily. In their chance me [...]

    • Two childhood companions reconnect in the woods on the lake where one has a family cabin. Ambitious Emily is just coming off a divorce and newly-single Jim is sketching his ex-girlfriend. Just as Emily comments on the surreal-ness of reconnecting another, the comics becomes surreal as we slip without warning into a variety of flashbacks, pivotal moments from their shared history. The thick-lined artwork is dominated by of solid black backgrounds of sky and water, making the subjects stand out. S [...]

    • Remember when we were young, and free and wild? When we go back to those places, isn't it heartbreaking how we know how we felt and we can't feel the same again? And beautiful, and stuff. Yes. This was dreamy and dark, and moody, and quick. I liked comics that feel like the artist just cracked open his brain and let the contents trickle/flow/spill out, the more honest the better. And Orff is really good at that.

    • This is a sweet simple story about two old friends who haven't seen each other in years catching up at a lake house. The art is black and white line work, and works very well. The relationship between the two characters is very familiar even if you haven't ever been in that situation - it just feels right. There's no major story beats, no real climax, it's just a slice of life with a side of melancholy tinged with hope. An interlude, and one worthy of visiting.

    • A moving, sweet tale of friendship. Makes me want to get in touch with the friend I played badmitton with as a teen.

    • i don't love or hate this book. i read it a week or so ago. it just portrays two friends reunited and soon to be split again.

    • Who says comics aren't beautiful and meaningful? This is a gem! It got me, and it got me good 'cause sometimes i yearn for a relationship like that. #sobbing #foreveralone
